Support for District Division

Several public meetings have been held across the district in cities that are part of an interlocal agreement. In Lehi, many spoke in favor of the split:

“I want to thank you for all you have done, for doing the study and for putting our children first” – Molly Barrington, Lehi

“We’ve lost our sense of community and become too big and disconnected. I don’t ever see bonds passing if we stay together.” – Katrina Cummins, Lehi

“No matter if the speaker showed support or concern, there was applause and, with it, a feeling that we are all in this together.” – Heather Newall, Lehi City Council

The quotes above are taken from an article in the Lehi Free Press.

In another article from The Daily Herald, concerns were expressed about East Shore, Special Education.

“I just don’t want those kids to get lost in the cracks.” – Aubrey Sorenson, Lehi

Alpine School District is already looking at making changes to special education, as noted in this Daily Herald article from April 2024.

The truth of the matter is that district programs are not any safer from change as a large district than they are as smaller districts. At any time, the ASD school board and/or administration could make changes. But in smaller districts, the community (parents, teachers, residents) would have a greater voice in what programs they feel should be kept, changed, or added.

Residents in the Central interlocal can still get informed and share their feedback at meetings coming up:

  • Alpine: July 30, 6pm
  • American Fork: July 23, 7pm
  • Cedar Hills: July 30, 5pm
  • Draper: July 16, 7pm
  • Highland: July 16, 7pm
  • Lehi: July 23, 7pm

Cities in the West interlocal agreements already had their public meetings, but elected officials would welcome any feedback on this topic.
