Split next steps

The Daily Herald posted an article about the next steps in the district split.

The article states that the next steps are:

  • “Cities have to submit an application to the Lieutenant Governor’s Office to receive a proposition number for the ballot.”
  • Written arguments for and against will need to be submitted to the county clerk’s office. These will then be sent out to the public prior to the election.
  • Finally, for any split to happen, “a majority of the voters within the proposed district boundaries will have to vote in favor of splitting from the current school district”.

There is one thing the article wasn’t quite correct on. It stated that “the proposal has the potential to create two new school districts and leave Alpine School District with Orem, Vineyard, Lindon and Pleasant Grove.”

According to Utah law, if any ballot initiatives pass, Alpine School District would cease to exist after 2027. All areas would be considered new school districts, including whatever cities are not voting on the propositions. So if the west passes and the central does not, all cities not in the west would still be part of a new district. And if the central passes, Orem, Vineyard, Lindon, and PG would only remain in Alpine School District until 2027, along with all cities.
