Recent News on ASD Split

Part of the mission of this blog is to maintain a record of how the school district split issue has evolved over time. Some recent articles may be of interest to readers:

Alpine School District split townhall

On Sept 23, a meeting was hosted by 2 ASD board members: Sarah Beeson (Lone Peak cluster) and Mark Clement (Pleasant Grove cluster). Important notes from the article:

  • Beeson and Clement are both opposed to splitting. Beeson claims this split effort is a top-down approach, instead of coming from grassroots. Clement says the district’s high academic results mean the district should not split.
  • “Beeson and Clement also argued any split would include tax increases.” ASD has raised taxes 6 times in 10 years, including in 2024. And needs just keep increasing. Taxes will increase with or without a split. But studies demonstrate that there is tax savings in a split, not to mention more transparency and local control over where those taxes are spent.
  • Concerning for residents out west is quote from the article: “While Clement said the board is committed to building a school there, he admitted that the support may be in jeopardy.”

“We’re not under the impression that everything we want will magically be fixed. What will be fixed is representation to prioritize what’s important to your community and how best to meet its needs. The reality is the needs are very different in different parts of the district.” – Briawna Hugh, ASD teacher

Three former Lone Peak ASD Board members release statement favoring district split

More recent news of note, 3 former board members who have represented the Lone Peak area, Wendy Hart, Amber Bonner, and Chrissy Hannemann, issued a joint statement endorsing Prop 11.

“We have differing views on many political and educational issues. However, we are united in support of the proposal to split Alpine School District. Our area would be best served by approving Proposition 11″ – Former ASD Board members

Other current and former board members have also endorsed both Prop 11 and Prop 14.
